Carb Wars: Hot Cocoa

Last week, a friend challenged me to find a hot cocoa recipe that was low in carbs and didn't suck. With Fall right around the corner, hot chocolate is a must-have in our house, and I was excited to find an alternative to one of my favorite indulgences.

Classic Hot Cocoa
Low Carb Makeover


  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 packets Splenda (or other sugar substitute)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of cinnamon (optional)


  • Mix the almond milk (or any other low carb milk of your choice) with the heavy cream and vanilla extract and heat in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. If you prefer, you can also bring the mixture to a slow boil on the stove top. Just remember to keep the burner on low and stir constantly to prevent sticking. 
  • In a mug, mix the cocoa powder, sugar substitute, and cinnamon (optional). Carefully pour the milk mixture into the mug and stir until rich and smooth. Top off with Reddi-wip and a sprinkle of nutmeg and enjoy!


  • Remove the cinnamon and substitute peppermint extract for the vanilla for Mint Hot Chocolate
  • Use only one tbsp of cocoa powder and exchange the almond milk for one cup of dark roast coffee for a quick Mocha Latte.
