January Fave Fives: Reflections

It’s a new year, and we all have goals and resolutions, things we want to accomplish in the coming months. For January, though, I wanted to take a moment to look back on some of our favorite memories from 2014. Whether it was a new high in our careers, a personal achievement, a family vacation, or even the little things, I asked some of your favorite authors to tell me their most memorable moments from 2014. Check out what they had to say!

Born with a silver tongue and a pen in her hand, Kali spends her days sleeping (she's part vampire) and her nights crafting scandalous romances with larger-than-life heroes.

Self-proclaimed patron goddess of reclusiveness, Kali currently resides in the Midwest with her oddly supportive family and tragically misunderstood cat.

Seriously, though, the cat is evil.

  • I celebrated the big 3-0 in 2014!
  • I went to Vegas for the very first time!
  • Family vacation in the mountains of Tennessee!
  • When my husband served me breakfast in bed, along with a love letter -- just because.
  • All the "Proud Mom" moments that are too numerous to list there. I have some seriously awesome kids. :)

Deep within the fortress of Pandora, Lieutenant Vane Schiva has spent millennium guarding precious artifacts and ancient secrets from around the universe. As the son of a decorated commander, he has always been a soldier first, putting the needs of his people before his own desires. So when the compound is breached and he’s sent across the galaxies to track down the thief, he never imagined the assignment would lead him to the only thing he’s ever wanted for himself.

Growing up in New Orleans, Charlotte Rousseau has seen her share of the strange and unexplainable, but everything she thought she knew about the world is about to be tested. What started as any other day, quickly spirals into a nightmarish reality, leaving her no choice but to place her trust—and her life—in a stranger’s hands. Safety comes at a price, though, and Charlotte soon realizes her only chance at survival means leaving behind her fears and following Vane into the fire.

Faced with the threat of war, new alliances are formed and old loyalties are tested in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. While emotions run high and sexual tensions simmer, Vane still guards a dangerous secret, one that could cost him everything in the end. He’ll do whatever it takes to protect Charlotte, though, even if that means turning his back on his own people.

War is easy. Love takes courage.

Thanks to Kali for inviting me to share my Five Fives with you. In looking back at 2014, I realize I have so much to be thankful for, but it's hard to encapsulate it all. I've decided to concentrate on some of the nice writing moments I had last year...oh, and one celebrity-gawking moment. No particular order.

  • Being asked to take part as a panelist at Paths to Publishing, an event run by my local library. I was honored to share my publishing experience with an audience of writers seeking publication. It was a wonderful networking opportunity and it really helped me feel I'd "arrived."
  • Discovering Luther and Sherlock. Um, Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch. Thank you very much. Every romance author needs inspiration and these gents will inspire a lot of it!
  • Seeing my paranormal romance Predator's Kiss, Gemini Island Shifters 1, hit a couple of bestseller lists. That was amazing.
  • Receiving a 5-star review and Top Pick from The Romance Reviews for another paranormal romance, Predator's Fire, Gemini Island Shifters 5.
  • Finally finishing and submitting Night Lover, a romance I've been working on for over ten years (in various forms). I can't tell you the sigh of relief I breathed when that one was done.

Failed actress Winn Busby is at the end of her rope. With no money and no prospects, she accepts the one job she never thought she’d see on her résumé. Professional bridesmaid. It should be easy. If only the idea of weddings and vows didn't give Winn a case of the hives. Her role becomes more challenging when she's told a reporter will shadow her work for a men's magazine article.

Working for Player Magazine is Patrick Lincoln's worst nightmare. A former political journalist, he used to write thoughtful columns for one of Toronto's most respected papers. That is, until he was blackballed for allegedly sleeping with the boss's wife. Overnight, Patrick becomes the city's most reviled bad boy. And now he's forced to write a seedy expose on, of all things, a bridesmaid.

Patrick begrudgingly accompanies Winn to a series of strange weddings. As they are forced to work together, he learns there is more to the stand-in bridesmaid than puffy dresses and pretty speeches. She, in turn, begins to question whether or not Patrick actually deserves the derision of his peers. As much as they fight their attraction, it begins to threaten their work and their sanity.

For so long, Winn has felt second-best. A stand-in. She finally meets a man who believes in her value. But can she let go of the past and accept him?

The Stand-In is available Feb. 9. Pre-Order Today!

  • The biggest favorite moment I had is the fact I am able to still write full-time, and have my dream job of creating stories people want to read. I think that will always be a favorite of mine.
  • The second favorite moment in 2014 is when I bought my dream house. It is something I’ve always wanted (owning my own property) and we were able to accomplish that dream at the end of 2014. Definitely a huge milestone!
  • Of course I am always thankful (and of course it is a favorite) when my family is healthy and happy!
  • I’ve met a lot of knew readers, and love having the ability to connect with them.
  • And last, but not least, I was able to meet many new authors, and have been able to be included in new projects with them.

The past year was crammed with amazing memories, but these were the five that stood out for me.

  • I wrote and published 3013: RENEGADE, my first book in the 3013 Series. That’s led to so many great things, especially the friendship that now exists between everyone involved in that series.
  • I had the chance to spend time with my “honorary” niece, teaching her how to drive. It was fun and occasionally terrifying, but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
  • I treated my best friend (and mother of the aforementioned “honorary” niece) to a day at the local spa. We soaked, we steamed, we drank herbal teas, and had the most incredible massages, followed by pedicures and then dinner out. It was a well earned day of respite, and now that I’ve remembered it, I’ve decided we really need to do that again, soon.
  • I got a new tattoo! It’s been nearly ten years since my last one, and I was way overdue for new ink. This was the first time I had one done on my arm, so I actually got to watch the process instead of just feeling it.
  • In November I boarded a plane to Las Vegas and got to spend the better part of a week hanging out with some awesome friends and fellow writers at the Bellagio. It was an exhausting, fun-filled trip.

SARANNA DEWYLDE

Saranna DeWylde has always been fascinated by things better left in the dark. She wrote her first story after watching The Exorcist at a slumber party. Since then, she's published horror, romance and narrative nonfiction. Like all writers, Saranna has held a variety of jobs, from operations supervisor for an airline, to an assistant for a call girl, to a corrections officer. But like Hemingway said, "Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it." So she traded in her cuffs for a full-time keyboard. She loves to hear from her readers.

  • Meeting one of my best friends in person for the first time and realizing our love was still so canon in person. I spent two weeks at her house and it was full of good food, good friends, and good conversation. Nicolasara forever.
  • Almost every email I've ever gotten about Fat where the reader told me how it touched them, changed them, and made them feel like they weren't so alone. It made me feel like I wasn't alone, either.
  • Mother's Day. It was the last conversation I had with my mom. I was in New Orleans and I called her. The very last thing I said to her was "I love you." We'd had a fight before I left and I wasn't going to call her. But something said I really needed to. So I did. I can live with that. I have no regrets and that's a gift.
  • Having pictures of myself that I don't want to burn with a hydrogen bomb. See #1.
  • New Year's Eve. Because it was over. '14 was one of the hardest years yet and I was so glad when the clock rolled over to '15. I shed so much in that single minute and I'm ready to face this new year with joy and passion.

“You’re a woman who is comfortable in her own sexuality. That necessarily means you must be labeled, categorized and filed away for everyone’s safety.”

Rebecca “Bex” Foxworth likes that description of herself. It makes her sound strong, dangerous, and powerful—like she’s standing against some grand injustice by using her body as she sees fit. That’s how her friend Claire Howard sees her and if Claire has taught her anything, it’s that labels are defined by the people who wear them, and not the other way around.

But SLUT is more than a label to Bex: it’s her armor. It protects her from ever having to share her true self. The loop in her head tells her she’s innately flawed and wholly unworthy. Why else would her parents insist she go under the knife for a new nose, a new body, and plastic perfection?

That’s something Thornton Henry Edgeleaf would never understand. Thornton is perfect, in every way—handsome, worldly, passionate—with just one unforgivable flaw: he’s utterly sincere. It makes Bex want to run screaming, back into the familiar, indifferent arms of men who won’t fail to dismiss and mistreat her. But nothing’s as easy as it used to be…

LAURIE ROMA

Laurie Roma lives in Chicago and mainly writes contemporary, romantic suspense, and sci-fi romance. She has always loved immersing herself in a good book and now enjoys the pleasure of creating her own. She can usually be found tapping away on her keyboard, creating worlds for her characters while she listens to music. Of course her playlist depends on her mood...but then again, so does her writing.

An avid reader of the romance genre, nothing bothers her more than annoying characters. Seriously, who wants a happy ending for someone that pisses you off? She loves tough alpha-male heroes and strong heroines that have brains as well as beauty. Her novels are filled with both passionate romance and down and dirty lust-driven interludes, as she believes both are essential to a good love story. She loves to hear from her readers and can be reached at laurieromabooks@gmail.com.

  • One of my favorite moments of 2014 was the creation of my Breakers' Bad Boys series. I love all the characters and the town itself, and was blessed to have Hammer be Evernight's Book Boyfriend of 2014.
  • I'm also very excited by the success of the 3013 series. I'm so honored and pleased that readers have embraced the 3013 world and the characters. It makes it a joy to write each new book in the series, and I am so happy that my good friends, Susan Hayes and Kali Argent, joined me in the series this past year.
  • My Vegas trip was another memorable time in 2014. I spent a wonderful week at the Bellagio, and got to hang out with some good friends. I also enjoyed my day at the spa there...and another when we got a cabana down by the pool. *sigh* I think another vacation sounds like a good idea right now...
  • Another highlight of 2014 was one of my best friend's wedding. She and I have known one another since we were 4 years old, and her wedding weekend was definitely one to remember!
  • Finally, I think the most important part of 2014 were the valuable lessons I learned. I could expand on this and write a novel...but let me just some it up by saying that even though last year was great, 2015 will be even better! :)

All traces of his former smile vanished, replaced by the cold, hard alertness of a trained soldier. “Stay here.”

Taking a more direct route to the door, he slid across the counter, landing with a dull thud on the other side, and crept toward the exit. Before he could reach for the knob this time, though, the back door flew open, banging into Vane and sending him crashing to the floor.

When a mountainous man charged into the room with a dagger at the ready, Charli didn’t stop to think. Grabbing the baking pan from the island counter, she lunged forward and swung with all of her strength. A loud clang echoed around the room, and her bones vibrated from the impact when the heavy pan found its mark.

The attacker yelled and stumbled, but he didn’t go down. So Charli hit him again.

“Charlotte, stop.”

A blind hysteria had overcome her, and Charli barely heard Vane yelling her name. She continued to wield her makeshift weapon, swinging it until her muscles ached and her fingers cramped. And she didn’t stop swinging until strong arms encircled her waist and lifted her off her feet.

“Stop, stop. It’s okay. You can stop.”

Vane’s voice finally penetrated her panicked mind, and Charli stopped fighting, stopped struggling, and sagged against his chest as she gulped in deep breaths. “Is he dead? I think I killed him.”

“Easy, calm down. You’re okay now.” In a strange turn of events, Vane began to laugh. “He’s not dead, but he probably wishes he was.”

The intruder sprawled on his stomach across the tiles, unmoving but clearly breathing. “That’s not Don.”

“No, prya, that’s not Don.” Vane rubbed his cheek against the top of her head and stroked her hair. “He’s a friend.”

“And this is how you greet friends?” The newcomer groaned as he pushed himself into a sitting position. “Damn, female, I think my brain’s bleeding.”

With another chuckle, Vane eased around Charli and sauntered over to assist the guy to his feet. “Do I have to remind you that you’re the one who came barging into a private residence? The lady had every right to defend herself against such savage behavior.”

The newcomer brushed his long, ebony braid back from his shoulder and turned to face Charli with a bow. “He’s right. My apologies.”

“Uh, hi.” Everything had happened so fast, and Charli was still trying to catch up, but she offered a little wave and a wobbly smile. “Sorry I broke your head.”

Vane winked at her and slapped his friend on the shoulder, eliciting a wince and a quiet groan from the guy. “Charlotte Rousseau, this is my partner and my best friend, Lieutenant Xavian Tira.”

Charli looked between the massive men in her kitchen while she willed her pulse to return to a less dangerous rhythm. Both men had to be over six and half feet tall, both dressed in identical uniforms of solid black with matching combat boots. Both had a set of daggers tucked into their belts and strange, glowing watches around their wrists. While Xavian appeared slightly taller with long, raven hair as opposed to Vane’s golden locks, they looked remarkably similar.

“Is he an alien from the future, too?” she asked, tucking her hands under her arms to hide their trembling.

“Yes,” Vane answered without a hint of sarcasm.

Xavian arched an eyebrow at Vane and cleared his throat before shifting his attention to Charli. “And how is that working out for you?”

“Well, I think you’re both crazy.” She winced when his eyes narrowed. While true, she hadn’t meant to say it aloud. “No disrespect. I mean, Vane said you’re a nice guy and all.”

“No he didn’t.”

Vane crossed his arms over his chest. “No, I didn’t.”

“Cami? Cami, look at me. Open your eyes and look at me.”

Warm hands cradled her face, bringing some semblance of reality back to her. Prying her lids open, she stared up at Tariq through blurry eyes and moaned. Everything hurt. Her heart pounded and her temples throbbed, making her lightheaded, and each breath came in short, shallow pants until her stomach cramped with nausea.

“Cami, focus,” Tariq ordered. “Look right here at me, only me.” He stroked her cheeks with his fingertips and petted her hair. “That’s it, angel. Deep breath. Good,” he praised when she complied. “Again. One more.”

Staring into his amber eyes, Cami breathed in through her nose and out through her mouth, focusing solely on his voice. “Keep talking, please.”

“I’m not going to let anything happen to you, remember?”

Then he did the most remarkable thing. Tariq pressed his palm to the side of her neck, using his thumb under her chin to tilt her face up, and kissed her. When their lips met, everything in her head melted away, dissolving into a peace she hadn’t known in years.

Her pulse accelerated once more, for a completely different reason this time, and Cami pressed closer, opening for him with a quiet whimper. The first glide of his tongue against hers sent a shiver down her spine, and the scrape of his fangs against her lower lip produced a lusty moan she didn’t know herself capable of making.

“That’s better,” Tariq whispered against the corner of her mouth. “You’re okay now.”

“Better than okay.” Cami tried to sit up, but stopped when Tariq closed his eyes and groaned. Only then did she realize they were sitting in the middle of the hallway with her perched in Tariq’s lap. “How did I get here?”

“I thought you were having a seizure or something, so I carried you out of the atrium.” He dropped his head back against the wall and groaned again. “Stop moving.”

“Oh.” Cami held perfectly still. “Did I hurt you?”

In response, he tucked her head under his chin and laughed. “No, angel, you didn’t hurt me.”

A hard bulge behind his zipper dug into her backside, alerting her to the problem. Pushing away from his chest, Cami peeked up at him through her lashes, realization finally dawning. “Oops, sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.” Sliding his arms around her midsection and behind her knees, Tariq stood, lifting her as easily as if she weighed nothing. “You need rest.”

“I’m feeling better now.” The pain in her head had vanished, and only a warm tingle in her belly—remnants of their kiss—remained. “Why did you kiss me?”

Though he looked straight ahead, Cami didn’t miss the faint smile or the way his voice gentled when he repeated his earlier assessment. “You talk too much.”

Resting her head on his shoulder, Cami sighed in contentment. “It only seems that way because you barely talk at all. I’ll try to be less vocal, though.”

Tariq pressed his lips to the top of her head as a satisfied rumbled vibrated his chest. “Don’t. I’ll get used to it.”
